The seminar titled “An Empirical Study of the Impact of the World Governance Indicators on the Human Development Index in Turkey: Evidence from a Time Series Analysis”, delivered by Prof. Dr. Ferda Halıcıoğlu, a faculty member at Bradford University and a former faculty member of our department, was held on December 30, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. in the Meeting Hall on the 7th Floor of C Block, North Campus of our university. The seminar was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences and Head of our Department, Prof. Dr. Faruk Bal, as well as faculty members and graduate students.
In her presentation, Prof. Dr. Halıcıoğlu addressed the relationship between governance quality and human development in Turkey within a comprehensive empirical framework. Using data from the World Bank’s World Governance Indicators and the United Nations Human Development Index, she examined the effects of different dimensions of governance on human development through long-run time series analyses. The analysis separately evaluated indicators such as rule of law, control of corruption, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, political stability, and voice and accountability, revealing how institutional improvements in these areas shape Turkey’s human development performance.
Prof. Dr. Halıcıoğlu emphasized that the findings demonstrate that improvements in governance quality have significant and persistent long-term effects on the level of human development. She also noted that policies aimed at strengthening institutional structures are crucial not only for economic growth but also for the core components of human development, including education, health, and living standards. Following the presentation, a question-and-answer session was held in which participants raised questions regarding methodological choices as well as the policy implications of the findings. The event concluded after an exchange of views and evaluations.
